STANDARD DIATONIC BLUES HARP Here for comparison is your standard diatonic blues harp. In cross harp style it is often played in second position, i.e. from the second hole upwards on draw, instead of the conventional first hole on blow upwards. |
MELODY MAKER TUNING (SUPER MAJOR!) Note also that you can also play the three main chords of C, G and D, which are the main ones for the key of G major. Despite starting on C, this harp IS a G major harp, and is labelled as such. It is designed to be played in cross-harp position from the second hole draw upwards. |

NATURAL MINOR This is a lovely bluesy sounding harp in the smooth version of the minor key, created by flattening the tuning of four reeds, but actually altering just two different name notes, to Eb and Bb. The diagram actually shows a G natural minor because it is designed to be played cross-harp style once again, from the second hole on draw. However, it is labelled for the key it is designed for, not by the bottom note, and so it is easy to get the right key. It even provides a full major scale for an octave from the 3rd note draw upwards. Another term for this type of minor scale might be melodic minor (though in the full version of this you play different notes on the way up than on the way down!) |
HARMONIC MINOR This plays the "bumpy" version of a minor scale, and gives different chords than the natural minor harp, though not any extra ones. Here E and A are flattened, a total of five notes being adjusted. It is described as ethnic Eastern European sounding, redolent of Arab, Gypsy, Yiddish music. This effect comes from the strange interval between 6 and 7 draw notes, which although labelled by next door letters of the alphabet do not sound like next door notes and produce the "bump"in the scale This one is designed to be played straight harp style and is labelled conventionally for the bottom note. This diagram is of a C harmonica minor. Incidentally, these diagrams are included with all Lee Oskar harmonicas on a leaflet enclosed in the box. |
We stock diatonic blues harps in all keys and chromatic harmonicas in sizes 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 hole. Makes include HOHNER, LEE~OSKAR, TOMBO, and we even stock spare Lee Oscar Reed Plates as a matter of course for replacement into existing Lee Oscars.
