THE  CHROMATIC HARMONICA NOTE-SYSTEM
A Diagram for a 12-hole harp

Diagram of how the notes are obtained on a 12 hole chromatic harmonica

Capital letters denote a blown note, small letters one you need to draw (suck!)

How A 12 hole Chromatic Harmonica Works

As you can in see the diagram ;above, the note layout is very simple. Each octave of your C scale works identically with C blow d Draw, the E blow F draw, G blow A Draw, then B draw C blow. You will notice that the main key note of C therefore is repeated on the change of octaves.on the lower light blue part of the diagram

Pushing in the lever on the right (the upper green section of the diagram) causes the airflow to go to a different set of reeds which play a note a semitone higher, hence C becomes C#, D becomes E#, E becomes E# (another F!) and so on

If you are playing in a flat key you will want to regard the new note as a sharp note with the same pitch. In that case you would go for the note below but use ithe lever to raise it to the note you really want. Thinking of flat notes as the equivalent sharp note helps a lot when playing the instrument.

You will also of course find notes such as B# which would most often be thought of as C natural, or E# which is most often used as F natural.

Theoretically a chromatic harmonica can play in any key and is usually therefore mostly available around the base key of C. This allows some logic in the operation, so that the white notes of the piano are represented with the lever untouched while pushing in the lever produces mainly the black notes (or the sharpened version of the note).

Some other keys are available in some chromatics to special order only, as many people would regard the other keys as more confusing! Please ring us on 0114 256 9089 for queries on this option.

THE HOHNER SUPER-CHROMONICA 64

Hohner Superchromonica the most famous chromatic harmonica of all in its boxThe Hohner Super-Chromonica 64

The Hohner Superchromonica 64 is a 12-hole harp with& a three octave chromatic range based around the C scale. This model is probably the most famous of all chromatic harmonicas having been used by the harmonica masters of yesteryear, such as Tommy Reilly and Larry Adler in bygone years and is still highly favoured today.

The 64 in its name refers to its having 64 reeds, 2 for the standard use on blow and draw of each hole and 2 more which are used when the lever is pressed for the sharpened version of the notes.
